Introducing MotionLab

Championing dancers’ health and well-being, the Prix de Lausanne is proud to welcome MotionLab, member of Swiss Medical Network, as its new Official Medical Partner, bringing cutting-edge, holistic care to support the next generation of elite artists.

MotionLab is a sports medicine centre based in Mont-sur-Lausanne and is part of the Swiss Medical Network. Established in 2019, this innovative centre places athletes and artists at the heart of its activities with a 360° approach. Bringing together doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists, psychologists, podiatrists, physiologists, and physical trainers under one roof, MotionLab champions excellence in sports and offers holistic support to athletes at all levels, as well as to anyone striving to maintain or enhance their fitness.

Since the end of 2024, MotionLab has been a partner of the Prix de Lausanne. In collaboration with the Clinique de Genolier and the Clinique de Montchoisi, it ensures the well-being of dancers throughout the selection process and up until the conclusion of the competition.

Interview with Dr. Matthieu Sailly

MotionLab’s role is to provide comprehensive medical support at every stage of the competition, from registration to its conclusion. Our primary goal is to safeguard the dancers’ health while enhancing their experience through a multidisciplinary approach.

For instance, before the competition, during the registration process, we provide an online medical questionnaire specifically tailored for dancers. This questionnaire assesses their physical and mental health as well as their nutritional habits. The results allow us to categorize candidates based on their risk levels and collaborate with their physicians and nutritionists if necessary. We also offer educational resources to non-selected candidates to help them improve their health and prevent potential issues in the future.

During the competition week, we establish an on-site clinic staffed with specialists from various fields, including internal medicine, sports medicine, podiatry, nutrition, and psychology. We also manage emergencies through a network of specialists and organize educational workshops on topics like stress management and nutrition. All of this is designed to provide holistic and personalized care.

Finally, we work closely with the Prix de Lausanne’s leadership to support their educational and health-focused mission. We develop innovative tools to raise awareness within the dance community and promote key messages about dancer well-being.

Our partnership has several key objectives:

  1. Education: The Prix de Lausanne serves as an exceptional platform to promote health-conscious and artist-centered practices within the dance world.
  2. Local recognition: This partnership highlights Lausanne’s expertise in performing arts medicine and positions MotionLab as a leading center for both artists and athletes.
  3. Artistic excellence: By collaborating with the artistic direction, we ensure the competition remains demanding, innovative, and respectful of dancers’ health. The goal is to provide an enriching experience, even for participants who don’t make it to the finals.

Dance is an extraordinarily demanding discipline. On the physical side, dancers train intensively from a young age, often exceeding 20 hours of practice per week. This significantly increases the risk of injury. On the psychological side, dancers must cope with high levels of stress, particularly in competitive settings like the Prix de Lausanne. Additionally, there are nutritional constraints: dancers require high energy levels while adhering to strict aesthetic standards. This is why a multidisciplinary approach is essential. Historically, dance relied on empirical practices. Today, with performing arts medicine, which draws inspiration from sports medicine, we provide evidence-based solutions to address the specific needs of dancers and support their well-being.

The Prix de Lausanne is truly unique. For young dancers, it’s an extraordinary experience that is both demanding and formative. Its format, combining intensive classes and interactions with instructors from the world’s leading dance schools, offers a rare opportunity for growth.

Even for those who don’t reach the Finals, this week serves as a stepping stone, providing insight into the expectations of major institutions. What stands out to me is the perfect balance the Prix de Lausanne achieves between rigor, innovation, and kindness. At MotionLab, we’re proud to bring our expertise to support this mission and contribute to the dancers’ well-being.

MotionLab is built on an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. At our 3,000 m² facility, we bring together experts from various fields, including physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology, podiatry, and more. We combine cutting-edge technology with human expertise. We also have a dedicated research and education department, which allows us to stay at the forefront of scientific recommendations and train the next generation of therapists.

As a member of the Swiss Medical Network, we benefit from comprehensive support. During the competition, we provide a dedicated medical team, including internal medicine doctors and nurses, as well as an emergency network when needed. This collaboration ensures high-quality service perfectly aligned with the Prix de Lausanne’s standards. Our mission goes beyond supporting dancers for just one week; we aim to contribute to their long-term well-being, whether in sports or the arts.
