Loukos was born in Athens and studied dance in Paris under the mentorship of Igor Foska, Boris Kniaseff and Raymond Franchetti. He also studied philosophy at the University of Aix-en-Provence. From 1972 until 1980, he danced successively with the Théâtre du Silence, with the Zurich Opera and with the National Ballet of Marseille, where he started assisting Roland Petit in 1980 (he re-staged Carmen for the American Ballet Theatre and L’Arlésienne for the London Festival Ballet).
After a short time with the Metropolitan Opera of New York, he joined the Opera of Lyon as Ballet Director at the invitation of Françoise Adret in 1985, before becoming a joint manager in 1988. He then took over the Artistic Direction from Françoise Adret in December 1991. The Ballet of the National Opera of Lyon credits him for the collaboration with many choreographers and worldwide creations as well as the introduction of new pieces into the repertoire, such as: Maguy Marin, Nacho Duato, Angelin Preljocaj, Lucinda Childs, Bill T. Jones, Stephen Petronio, Jirí Kylián, William Forsythe, Jean – Claude Gallotta, Flemish Frederick, Hervé Robbe, Meryl Tankard, MatsEk, Lionel Hoche, Tero Saarinen, Trisha Brown, Ohad Naharin, Dominique Boivin, Mathilda Monnier, Russell Maliphant, Philippe Decouflé, Christian Rizzo, Ann Teresa De Keersmaeker, Sasha Waltz, Odile Duboc, Merce Cunningham, Jérôme Bel and Rachid Ouramdane. With many tours both in France and abroad, the company became a world-wide ambassador for the city of Lyon.
Yorgos Loukos was the organizer of the French dance festival France Moves in New York, which was run in May 2001 and co-produced with different local theatres. He created a similar event in London in Autumn 2005. From 1992 to 2011 he directed the Cannes Dance Festival and the Festival of Athens from 2006 to 2015.
