PRIX DE LAUSANNE 2008

From January 29th to February 3rd

in the Théâtre de Beaulieu, Lausanne

Lausanne, February 2008 – Outstanding success for the 36th edition of the Prix de Lausanne.

The final of the Prix de Lausanne 2008 played to a packed house.

In addition to the stunning level of the 21 finalists who would all have deserved to win a scholarship, one can safely state that the competition week was studded with stellar personalities and events.

John Neumeier as president of the jury, as choreographer for candidates’ variations, and as the creator of a splendid tribute to Maurice Béjart.

"YONDERING", an exceptional ballet seen for the first time in Switzerland, created by John Neumeier and performed by the students of three remarkable schools united in Lausanne for the occasion: those of Hamburg, Toronto and the Paris Opera.

A video-blog providing a different and more intimist view of candidates’ experience was viewed by thousands of cybernauts.

An extremely attractive mini-exhibition, staged in the theatre and featuring the paintings of Elvire Kremis Braunschweig who passed away last August, joint founder of the Prix de Lausanne with her husband Philippe Braunschweig,.

A seminar organised in conjunction with the prestigious IMD business school and entitled: Sponsors and Artistic Institutions – Differing Expectations.

A tribute to Mavis Staines, Artistic Director of the Prix de Lausanne for seven years, and who has decided – after remodelling the competition and taking it to the very pinnacle of international dance competitions – to hand over the reins to her successor Wim Broeckx, currently director of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

A photo exhibition, named Bridge 08 and created by young photographers expressing the vision they had of the young dancers taking part in the 2007 edition of the competition, installed at the heart of the city on the Grand Pont.

The Prix de Lausanne is certainly more youthfully dynamic than ever!

Results of study on the health of dancers at the 2004 and 2005 Prix de Lausanne

03.01.08

Over the years, medical research and anecdotal evidence have shown that ballet dancers, on average, have a low Body Mass Index (a measure of weight, relative to height) and that their bone mineral density is also lower than the average population. Both of these factors are known to give rise to an increased risk of stress fractures in dancers, but how these factors work together to influence long-term bone health and, in particular, their relationship to the long-term and debilitating condition of osteoporosis, is poorly understood. Selected candidates for the Prix 2008

05.11.07

157 candidates (129 girls and 28 boys), representing 29 different nationalities, applied to participate in the video selection that took place last October 20-21.

The assessing panel for the qualifying round of the competition was made up of the Prix's artistic committee, with support from a group of dance experts, each of whom meets the criteria for membership of a Prix de Lausanne jury. The names of the artistic committee members and the jury selection criteria can be found here.

The assessing panel’s goal was to identify the career potential of each candidate. Whilst advanced technical skills were taken into account, dancers were not judged solely on their achievements to date, but on whether we observed the potential we believe necessary to succeed within a dancing career

Following this process, we are very pleased to inform you that the panel have selected 71 young dancers (51 girls and 20 boys), representing 22 different nationalities, to go through to the next stage of the competition, which will take place in Lausanne from January 29 to February 3, 2008. You can see who they are here .

Further to the agreement between the Prix de Lausanne and other ballet competitions (Seoul International Ballet Competition, Shanghai International Ballet Competition, Youth America Grand Prix), four young dancers will take part in the 36th Prix de Lausanne without having had to go through the DVD selection. The names of these young dancers can be seen at the end of the list of candidates selected for the 2008 Prix de Lausanne.

We would like to congratulate all these candidates and wish them all the best for their preparation in the next coming months.

2008 : New features of the schedule

16.10.07

The aim of the Prix de Lausanne is to identify potential in young dancers, rather than to evaluate their training and achievements to date. Each year, the Artistic Commission of the Prix de Lausanne undertakes a brainstorming session with the jury to investigate more effective ways to do this. These sessions have led to an extensive remodelling of the competition week in Lausanne, with changes focussed on two main areas:

  • Candidates will be grouped into two age categories: ages 15 to 16 and ages 17 to 18. This is to take into account the differences between the youngest and the oldest candidates, which is particularly marked at this stage of their development. Both classical and contemporary classes will be given separately to each group and the choice of classical variations will also differ, with soloist variations suggested for younger candidates and étoile variations reserved for older competitors.

  • The jury will be given more time to observe candidates in a learning environment rather than in variations rehearsed in advance of the competition. This will help the jury to assess the candidates’ ability to deal with new material and to grasp new repertoire, essential qualities within the professional dance world.

To allow the jury to make an in-depth appraisal of candidates prior to the final, the majority of the competition will now serve as a single selection phase. The semi-final which served in past years as an intermediate stage will no longer take place. Finalists (around twenty in all) will be chosen from the entire line-up of 70 or so candidates present in Lausanne.

In addition, finalists will now present one classical and one contemporary ballet variation instead of the three presented in previous years. This change is part of our efforts to improve the balance between studio and on-stage evaluations.

This refined formula combines a number of changes made over the years and will shorten the total duration of the competition by one day. We believe that the new schedule uses the available time in the most efficient and most effective way, allowing the jury to acquire, over the course of the competition, an all-round view of each candidate’s potential.

The schedule will now run as follows:

Tuesday:
Non-competition

From Wednesday through Saturday:
Selection

Sunday:
final

  • registration
  • classical and contemporary classes

  • classical and contemporary lessons
(with the jury observing only – no marks will be given)
  • teaching sessions dealing with classical and contemporary enchaînements
    (with the jury giving marks)
  • public performance of the two variations  on Saturday
    (with the jury giving marks)
  • finalists present their two variations in public

The public will be able to watch all activities taking place on stage from the balcony of the theatre. We hope that many of you will make use of this opportunity and we will give you more information in December.

John Neumeier will serve as the President of the 2008 jury.

24.09.07

The Prix de Lausanne is delighted to announce the participation in the 2008 competition of the renowned choreographer and Director of the Hamburg Ballet, John Neumeier.

Mr Neumeier has graciously agreed to serve as the President of the 2008 jury in Lausanne and will lead a panel comprising, among other famous ballet stars, Altinay Asylmuratova, Elisabeth Platel and Anna Maria Prina.

In addition to his participation as President of the jury, Mr Neumeier has generously contributed twelve excerpts from his extensive repertoire, from which candidates can select the contemporary ballet variation they will present in the competition. These variations have been captured on film in Hamburg, performed by dancers of Mr Neumeier's company, some of whom are former laureates of the Prix de Lausanne.

Candidates will be able to learn the variations from the DVD recording in advance of the competition. During the week in Lausanne, they will be coached in these variations by members of Mr Neumeier's staff. This opportunity to study Mr Neumeier's repertoire with the guidance of his own artistic team is unique to the Prix de Lausanne, and underlines the Prix's reputation as an exceptional learning experience for talented young artists.
